Anathema’s Best Songs: A Handpicked Top 10 Playlist
These are the best songs by Anathema — iconic hits carefully handpicked from across their entire discography. And if you know the band, then you already know how different their albums are from one another.
The group pioneered the death/doom metal genre but later switched things up, exploring alternative metal and eventually more of an alternative rock sound. I included tracks from all their eras in this list, so you can enjoy the very best of what they’ve created.
Anathema’s TOP 10 best hits
If you’re looking for music with a unique sound, and if you appreciate emotional, atmospheric lyrics — you’ll enjoy this song collection. It’s unfortunate that the band remained somewhat under the radar, and many metal fans never discovered them.
That’s exactly why I created this chart and organized it into a playlist — to share the greatest songs this incredible band ever released. But fewer words, more music! Let’s start with number 10 on the list.
10. Anathema – Flying (from A Natural Disaster – 2003)
One of the most popular songs among Anathema’s fans who prefer their newer sound. The songs has been released as a remaster.
9. Anathema – Destiny (from Alternative 4 – 1998)
A short but beautifully crafted piece of music. Gentle acoustic guitar, soft vocals and intricate melody shows how talented the band has always been.
8. Anathema – A Dying Wish (from The Silent Enigma – 1995)
One of the heavier songs on the list. Recorded for the second album The Silent Enigma, it features Vincent Cavanagh as a new lead vocalist. One of a few songs where he used growl vocals.
7. Anathema – Judgement (from Judgement – 1999)
One of a kind track that sees the tension slowly building up into an explosive resolution in the second half of the song. A certified banger!
6. Anathema – Forgotten Hopes (from Judgement – 1999)
A beautiful combination of mesmerizing acoustic and electric guitars that create a wonderful melodic masterpiece. The lyrics deserve a separate note – very memorable and profound.
5. Anathema – Regret (from Alternative 4 – 1998)
Yet another exceptional track from one of the band’s greatest albums Alternative 4. The harmonies on it one are just out of this world. And once again the lyrics are on a different level. You won’t find anything like this with modern groups.
4. Anathema – Suicide Veil (from Eternity – 1996)
A song that is often considered to be one of their most sombre ones. But don’t let it distract you from the composition’s undeniable beauty. Also has the most magical and soft melodic endings you’ll ever hear.
3. Anathema – Kingdom (from Pentecost III – 1995)
From the band’s second EP and with the original vocalist Darren White, this song has that special dark and mysterious atmosphere that made Anathema the staple of Doom genre. A slow burner that hits super hard.
2. Anathema – Fragile Dreams (from Alternative 4 – 1998)
The melody, the instruments, the arrangement, the lyrics – everything in this song is excellent. No wonder it’s so beloved by fans. I also recommend checking earlier acoustic version.
1. Anathema – Lost Control (from Alternative 4 – 1998)
A perfect example of Anathema’s signature sound, showcasing their unique ability to create music that is both heavy and tranquil. The emotional lyrics are deeply captivating, and the music serves as the perfect partner in this exquisite track.
